"You hit the nail on the head. You can build a great soccer stadium. However, apathy will always be a part of DU athletics. The University needs to bring back football. Football bonds students and alumni. No DU you don't need to have a supersized football program. Just a program that will create some excitement in the fall. Why not be the only intercollegiate football team in Denver. I helped organize the club team that played during 1984. We had over 500 people come to our first club game. Yes, we were outmatched during that season. However, there was an excitement in the air. The buzz was prevelant among the students and the media. Congrats to ODU who will field a varsity football program in 2009. Come on DU get with the times. The time is now. Time to return Football to the Hilltop."

I believe the ODU to which he refers is Old Dominion, a state university in Virginia. They plan 63 scholarships, which is probably more than DU could handle.

My thought is something more like what Campbell University will be starting in 2008.

Campbell's annual budget will be about $500,000. I see attitude, not funding, as the major obstacle to starting a similar program at DU.

The following is from an article on returning excitement to University of Detroit Mercy athletics. They are looking at bringing back football as a nonscholarship sport, similar to the level played at San Diego, Drake, Valparaiso, and Dayton.

Is football the answer?

The blockbuster is football. UDM wants to generate revenue, increase community awareness and its male enrollment. The school dropped football in 1964 and once played Notre Dame at sold-out Tiger Stadium.

"I think it is something that can happen," Joseph said. "We are exploring that right now. I don't think it is too ambitious of a plan because we are in a (football) hotbed. It does not have the price tag that you would think. We can have an intimate 3,500-4,000-seat stadium. I am pushing it. It is being discussed on campus. My view is this would bring 100 guys who are not normally on our campus. We have to go out and get them. It brings back to the place something that is missing."

Count (basketball coach) Watson in favor.

"I think it has great possibilities," he said. "You have a large segment of the alumni who still talks about the good old days of football. And I think it would improve the atmosphere at basketball because at most schools basketball supports football and football supports basketball."
